About Krav Maga
Krav Maga (‘contact combat’ in Hebrew) is a hybrid system of combat that originated in Israel that has been adapted for use in civilian self-defence situations. It focuses on simple, natural responses to common threats. Based on boxing and wrestling, it also incorporates kicking, clinching, throwing and ground-fighting from other systems, along with techniques that would be considered ‘dirty’ or illegal in competitive sports, such as headbutting, gouging the eyes, and kicking the groin.

Krav Maga emphasises creating opportunities to escape as our interpretation of ‘winning’, and the legality of trainees’ responses. We also focus on use of voice, use of the environment, dealing with weapons (particularly knives), fighting multiple attackers, and defending others if need be. We also cover using improvised objects that are in our everyday environment, such as bags, bottles, stones and chairs.
About a third of our time at CWKM is spent in some form of resistant sparring, usually some variation of boxing, kickboxing or wrestling. But where we differ from many competitive sports is that we do this in a scaled way, with our main emphasis on partner safety so that it is fun and accessible for beginners whilst being challenging-but-safe for more experienced trainees. Sparring for self-defence trainees should be developmental. If you’ve enjoyed boxing or kickboxing, but reached the point where you can’t go home with a dizzy head any more, you’ll probably enjoy what we do! Many of the students you can see in the clips below are doing what they’re doing for the first time.
